Security entitlements for cloud-based productions

In support of a new cloud-based production pipeline, DreamWorks was in need of a security entitlements solution. The team conducted research, delivered designs, and developed Harbor, which enables the creation of movie production and role-specific security entitlements. Harbor is one in a suite of applications enabling DreamWorks’ vision of a cloud-enabled production pipeline.

Supporting security needs across workflows

The team conducted research across three studios in order to understand the unique needs of each production pipeline. This allowed us to create a long-term vision for security entitlements management that would scale across DreamWorks Animation, NBCU Live Action, and DreamWorks Television.

Ensuring security through the life cycle of a production

Security requirements evolve throughout the life cycle of a production. To create an effective solution, the application needed to guarantee seamless provisioning for internal employees as well as third-party vendors at various stages of the production.

Security management built for movie productions

Harbor helps teams manage the access and entitlements of each production through dedicated views for teams and a centralized global directory for organization-wide control. Our solution enables the creation of a global partner ecosystem for movie production by supporting scalable security entitlements across organizations, vendors, and regions.

Easy permissioning through templates

Administrators are responsible for managing the security permissions of hundreds of people. To make management easier, Harbor offers security entitlements templates that can be applied to users in bulk. The templates ensure consistency in access based on a user’s role during production.

Customizable for the needs of each production

Permissions are assigned by production and apply exclusively to that productions’s domain, allowing for complete customization at the production level. The systems allows security administrators to assign permissions to each user based on their contributions on each production.

Global management for distributed teams

Security administrators have global control of entitlements at both the production and user level, allowing granular permission settings for internal employees as well as third-party vendors. This level of control enables DreamWorks to manage the access of artists anywhere in the world – enabling a global production pipeline.

A system for a cloud-enabled production pipeline

Harbor was designed and developed alongside six other applications to support critical elements of DreamWorks’ cloud-based production pipeline. The team managed parallel work streams to ensured consistency and compatibility resulting in an integrated system to support DreamWorks’ production pipeline.
